Fidelity Flight Simulation Incorporated’s, dba F2Si, Production Manager, John Sommerer, participated as a judge for Pittsburgh’s WQED 2018-2019 Design Lives Here program on March 13th and 14th. John spent time over the past two months mentoring Ms. Jennifer Evans’ Science Club students from Bethel Park Independence Middle School. Engineers’ Society of Western PA (ESWP), a founding partner of the program, reached out to John and asked if he would be able to participate in the program working with the students and preside as a judge as well.
John commented, “It is great to be involved in educational programs such as the Design Lives Here initiative to possibly inspire future engineers. Seeing the young creative minds at work also inspires me. It is nice to work for an organization like F2Si that encourages support of community and educational programs.”
Design Lives Here is a semester-long engineering mentorship program engaging teachers and students with engineering activities throughout the year. Each spring, students from the participating schools (public, parochial, and private) come together to participate in a day of engineering challenges. The students are grouped in new teams to compete for prizes.
The Design Lives Here program is a WQED Multimedia project bringing teachers and students in the viewing area together with professional engineers to mentor the students. Participating schools have the option to introduce the program as part of the school day or as an extended afterschool program.
